> **Summary:** Looker Studio, renamed Data Studio in April 2026, is still free and good for simple Google-stack reports. Teams leave it over GA4 quota errors, paid connectors for non-Google data and rebuilding reports by hand. Better Analyst replaces chart building with plain-English questions; Databox and Klipfolio suit KPI dashboards; Metabase suits SQL teams.

Why teams outgrow Google's free report builder, and which tool to move to depending on your data, your budget and who reads the reports.

Disclosure: Better Analyst publishes this guide and ranks itself first. Competitor features and prices come from each vendor's own website, checked on October 26, 2026.

> **The short answer**
>
> Stay on Looker Studio, now called Data Studio again, if your reports are simple and mostly Google data. Move when you're fighting GA4 quota errors, paying for partner connectors, or rebuilding the same report for every client. Better Analyst is best if you'd rather ask questions than build charts, Databox or Klipfolio for KPI dashboards, and Metabase if your data lives in SQL.

## First, the name: Looker Studio is Data Studio again

In April 2026 Google returned Looker Studio to its original name, Data Studio. Nothing about the free tier changed: Google's pricing page still lists self-service Data Studio at no charge and Data Studio Pro at $9 per user per project per month. Most people still search for "Looker Studio", so we use both names here.

## Why teams look for a Looker Studio alternative

- **GA4 quota errors.** Every chart on a GA4 report queries the GA4 Data API. Google documents limits for standard properties of 200,000 tokens per property per day, 40,000 per hour and 10 concurrent requests, and its Looker Studio troubleshooting guide has a section on GA4 quotas being exceeded. Chart-heavy client reports viewed by several people hit those limits.
- **Paying for non-Google data.** Native connectors cover Google products and a handful of databases. Sources such as Meta Ads typically arrive through partner connectors, which are usually paid.
- **Rebuilding by hand.** Blends, calculated fields and per-client copies are all manual, so a report that took a day to build takes another day for the next client.
- **Answers need a person.** A dashboard shows that conversions fell; working out why still means exporting data or writing SQL. Data Studio's Gemini features are tied to Pro, and its newer conversational analytics works on BigQuery data agents.

## How we chose

We looked for tools that fix the specific reasons people leave Data Studio rather than general BI rankings:

- **Google data without quota pain**: GA4 and Search Console support that doesn't break on busy reports.
- **Non-Google sources**: SQL databases, warehouses and spreadsheets without a paid connector layer.
- **Effort per report**: How long a new report or a per-client copy takes.
- **Analysis**: Whether the tool helps explain a change, not just chart it.
- **Sharing**: Public links, scheduled delivery and branding.
- **Cost**: Entry price and how it grows with users, dashboards or sources.

Better Analyst is our own product; we only describe features shown on its live website and list its gaps too.

## The 7 best Looker Studio alternatives

### 1. Better Analyst

Best if you want to skip chart building: describe the dashboard or ask the question, and get the answer with the SQL or Python behind it.

- **Best for:** Marketers, agencies and operators who report on GA4, Search Console, Sheets or SQL data and want answers as well as dashboards
- **Pricing:** Free plan available (see /pricing)
- **Pros:** Describe a dashboard in plain English, then edit it by chatting, dragging cards or using the Setup and Style tabs; Looker-style filter controls, date ranges with comparisons, and chart clicks that filter the page; Connects to GA4, Search Console, Google Sheets, Airtable, BigQuery, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server and Supabase; Scheduled refreshes, scheduled reports by email or Slack, and alerts on any metric
- **Cons:** Google Ads connects directly, but Meta Ads is coming soon and there are no other ad-platform connectors; Far fewer connectors than Data Studio's partner catalog

Better Analyst works the other way round from Data Studio. Instead of picking a data source, dragging charts and writing calculated fields, you connect the source and describe what you need: "weekly organic sessions and key events by landing page, compared with last year". The [web dashboard](https://betteranalyst.com/product/dashboards) it builds has Looker-style filter controls and date comparisons, and you can ask the AI on any card to change it, dig into a number or explain it. Because every answer shows its SQL or Python, an analyst can check the logic.

It is strongest where Data Studio is weakest: explaining changes and reusing work. A finished dashboard can be pointed at another client's data source, [scheduled tasks](https://betteranalyst.com/product/scheduled-tasks) rerun analyses on a schedule, and [Data Flows](https://betteranalyst.com/product/data-flows) push results into Google Sheets or a database. The gaps are ad platforms and connector breadth. ### 2. Databox

The closest drop-in for KPI dashboards: pre-built metrics, goals and an AI analyst on a governed metric layer.

- **Best for:** SMB and in-house teams tracking KPIs across marketing, sales and finance apps
- **Pricing:** Free tier for 1 user and 3 sources; Analyst $71/mo billed annually; 14-day trial on paid tiers
- **Pros:** 130+ integrations including GA4, ad platforms, HubSpot and SQL databases; Goals, anomaly detection and the Genie AI analyst; Agency tier for multi-client accounts
- **Cons:** Many meters: users, data sources, AI credits; White-labeling is a $200/month add-on

Databox is easier to start with than Data Studio thanks to ready-made metrics for common apps, and it handles non-Google sources natively. Watch the data-source limits on lower tiers.

### 3. Klipfolio

Maximum control over custom dashboards, with formula-driven Klips and 130+ integrations, for teams willing to learn it.

- **Best for:** Data-savvy teams that want pixel-level control and custom formulas across many sources
- **Pricing:** $120/mo billed annually, or $140 billed monthly, for 3 dashboards; 14-day free trial
- **Pros:** Data modelling and joins across 130+ sources including SQL databases; Refresh from every 4 hours down to near real time on higher tiers; Scheduled PDF and image reports, published links
- **Cons:** Steep learning curve compared with Data Studio; White-label bundle is $299/mo billed annually on top of a dashboard-capped tier

Klipfolio Klips will do almost anything a Data Studio report can and more, but expect to invest time in its formula language. Its newer AI-oriented product, PowerMetrics, is sold separately.

### 4. Metabase

Open-source BI for querying your own database or warehouse with SQL or a click-based builder.

- **Best for:** Startups and data teams whose data already sits in a SQL database or warehouse
- **Pricing:** Open source free to self-host; Starter $100/mo, or $90/mo billed annually, for 5 users
- **Pros:** Free self-hosted edition with unlimited users; SQL editor plus a no-code question builder; AI questions with your preferred model, and an MCP server
- **Cons:** No native GA4 or ad-platform connectors; marketing data must land in a database first; Not designed for client reporting on lower tiers

If your reports are built on BigQuery, PostgreSQL or Snowflake, Metabase is the most direct replacement and the cheapest if you can host it yourself.

### 5. Zoho Analytics

Low-cost, general-purpose BI with 500+ connectors and a conversational assistant, Ask Zia.

- **Best for:** Small businesses wanting cheap BI, especially if they already use Zoho apps
- **Pricing:** Free tier for 2 users; paid from $24/mo billed annually, according to Zoho's FAQ; 15-day free trial
- **Pros:** 500+ connectors including Google Analytics, ad platforms and databases; 250+ data-preparation transforms; Ask Zia AI assistant and automated insights
- **Cons:** Row limits and connector caps by tier; Agency workflows such as per-client templates take setup

Zoho Analytics is a full BI suite at a small-business price. It's a good fit when you need more modelling than Data Studio offers but not an enterprise budget.

### 6. DashThis

The simplest switch for agencies that only used Data Studio for monthly marketing reports.

- **Best for:** Small agencies sending standard marketing KPIs to clients
- **Pricing:** $54/mo, or $44/mo paid yearly, for 3 dashboards; 14-day free trial
- **Pros:** Preset templates for common marketing reports; Native ad-platform connectors, no partner layer; White-label and automated email delivery
- **Cons:** Price rises with the number of dashboards; No BigQuery or SQL database connectors

If your Data Studio reports were mainly Google Ads, Meta Ads and GA4 summaries for clients, DashThis replaces them with less maintenance. For a deeper comparison of agency tools, see our guide to the [best client reporting tools](https://betteranalyst.com/blog/best-client-reporting-tools).

### 7. Power BI or Tableau

Enterprise BI platforms: far more modelling power than Data Studio, at a higher price and with more setup.

- **Best for:** Companies already standardised on Microsoft or Salesforce, with analysts to maintain models
- **Pricing:** Power BI Pro is $14 per user per month, paid yearly; Tableau is priced per user role
- **Pros:** Deep data modelling and governance; Large connector catalogs
- **Cons:** Cost per viewer adds up quickly; Heavier to set up and maintain than any tool above

Power BI and Tableau are the usual corporate step up from Data Studio. They're more expensive enterprise tools, worth it when you need governed models rather than quick reports.

## When to stay on Data Studio

Data Studio is still the right choice if your reports use Google sources only, a handful of people view them, and someone on the team enjoys building charts. Cut quota errors by using fewer charts per page, extracting data, or exporting GA4 to BigQuery and reporting from there, as Google's troubleshooting guide suggests.

## How to move a Looker Studio report to Better Analyst

1. **List what the report really uses:** its data sources, the 5–10 metrics people read, filters, and date comparisons.
2. **Connect the same sources:** GA4 and Search Console with Google sign-in, Google Sheets by sharing the sheet, or your database with read-only credentials.
3. **Describe the report** in one prompt, including comparisons and breakdowns.
4. **Adjust it** by chatting or dragging cards, apply a brand kit, and share the link.
5. **Schedule it** as a refresh or a task, and add an alert for the metric that matters most.

> **Try this prompt:** “Recreate our weekly marketing report: GA4 sessions, engagement rate and key events by default channel group, Search Console clicks and CTR for our top 20 queries, each compared with the previous period, with a date filter and a channel filter.”

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Looker Studio being discontinued?

No. Google renamed it from Looker Studio back to its original name, Data Studio, in April 2026. The self-service tier remains free and Data Studio Pro continues as a paid subscription.

### Why does Looker Studio show GA4 quota errors?

Each chart on a GA4-connected report sends requests to the GA4 Data API, which limits tokens per property per day and per hour and allows only a few concurrent requests. Reports with many charts, many viewers or several pages for the same property hit those limits first. Google's own troubleshooting guide covers the error.

### What is the best free Looker Studio alternative?

For SQL databases, Metabase's open-source edition is free to self-host. For a hosted option, Databox and Zoho Analytics have free tiers with limits on users and data sources, and Better Analyst has a free plan; check each vendor's pricing page for current limits.

### Can I migrate Looker Studio reports automatically?

There is no universal import. The practical route is to list each report's data sources, metrics, filters and date comparisons, then rebuild the most-used reports first. With an AI tool you can describe the report rather than recreate every chart by hand.

### Is Power BI or Tableau a better Looker Studio replacement?

Both are capable enterprise BI tools, but they cost more per user and take longer to set up. They make sense when a company already standardises on Microsoft or Salesforce, or has analysts to build and maintain models.
