## Parameters

| Parameter | Required | Description |
| - | - | - |
| **dividend** | Yes | The number to be divided (the numerator). |
| **divisor** | Yes | The number to divide by (the denominator). Cannot be zero. |

## What Is DIVIDE?

DIVIDE is the function version of the division operator in Google Sheets. `=DIVIDE(A1, B1)` returns exactly what `=A1/B1` returns: the first value divided by the second. It belongs to the same family of operator functions as [ADD](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/add-function), MINUS, and MULTIPLY.

## How DIVIDE Works

DIVIDE takes **two arguments**: the **dividend** (the number being split up) and the **divisor** (the number you are splitting by). It returns dividend ÷ divisor. Both arguments must be single numeric values. If the divisor is zero or an empty cell, the function returns `#DIV/0!`.

## Basic Examples

### Divide two numbers

```
=DIVIDE(100, 8)
```

Returns 12.5.

### Divide one cell by another

```
=DIVIDE(B2, C2)
```

If B2 holds total revenue and C2 holds the number of orders, the result is average order value.

### Calculate a percentage

```
=DIVIDE(B2, B10)
```

Divides one line item by the grand total. Format the cell as a percentage to show, for example, 23.5%.

### Divide and round

```
=ROUND(DIVIDE(B2, C2), 2)
```

Divides and rounds the result to two decimal places, useful for currency.

## Handling Division by Zero

The most common problem with division is a zero or blank divisor. Wrap DIVIDE in IFERROR or an [IF](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/if-function) check to show something friendlier than `#DIV/0!`:

```
=IFERROR(DIVIDE(B2, C2), 0)
```

Returns 0 whenever the division fails.

```
=IF(C2=0, "", DIVIDE(B2, C2))
```

Leaves the cell blank when the divisor is zero, and divides otherwise. This version is more precise, because IFERROR also hides other errors (such as text in B2) that you might want to see.

## DIVIDE vs. the / Operator

| Feature | DIVIDE | / operator |
| - | - | - |
| Result | dividend ÷ divisor | dividend ÷ divisor |
| Number of inputs | Exactly 2 | Chainable |
| Readability | Spelled out as a function | Compact |
| Behaviour on zero | `#DIV/0!` | `#DIV/0!` |

There is no difference in the answer. Choose whichever reads better in your sheet.

## Dividing Whole Columns

Combine DIVIDE with ARRAYFORMULA to divide one column by another in a single formula:

```
=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(C2:C="", "", DIVIDE(B2:B, C2:C)))
```

This calculates a ratio for every row and leaves rows blank where no divisor exists.

## Common Use Cases

- **Ratios and rates**: cost per click, revenue per user, conversion rate
- **Shares of a total**: each region's portion of company sales
- **Unit pricing**: package price divided by quantity
- **Averages by hand**: a total divided by a count, for example `=DIVIDE(SUM(B2:B50), COUNT(B2:B50))`
- **Splitting costs**: a bill divided by the number of people

## Common Errors

- **#DIV/0!**: The divisor is 0 or blank. Use IF or IFERROR as shown above.
- **#VALUE!**: One of the arguments is text that cannot be converted to a number.
- **Wrong argument order**: `=DIVIDE(C2, B2)` gives the reciprocal of what you meant. The number being divided always comes first.
- **Too many arguments**: DIVIDE accepts exactly two values. For a chain such as a ÷ b ÷ c, nest the function or use `/`.

## Tips and Best Practices

- When you build a percentage, divide first and then apply percentage formatting rather than multiplying by 100. The underlying value stays usable in other formulas.
- For the remainder after division, use MOD. For the whole-number part, use QUOTIENT.
- Use absolute references (`$B$10`) for a fixed total so you can copy the formula down a column.
- When calculating a mean, [AVERAGE](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/average-function) is shorter and ignores blanks automatically.

## Example use case

A marketing analyst has ad spend in column B and conversions in column C. Using =IF(C2=0, "", DIVIDE(B2, C2)), they calculate cost per conversion for each campaign without showing #DIV/0! for campaigns with no conversions yet.
