## Parameters

| Parameter | Required | Description |
| - | - | - |
| **value** | Yes | The number, or reference to a cell containing a number, to format as a percent. Non-numeric values are returned unchanged. |

## What Is TO\_PERCENT?

TO\_PERCENT returns a number with percentage formatting applied. The key thing to understand is that percentages in spreadsheets are fractions of 1: the value 0.25 displays as 25%. TO\_PERCENT does **not** divide by 100 — it simply changes how the number is shown. So `=TO_PERCENT(0.25)` displays `25%`, while `=TO_PERCENT(25)` displays `2500%`.

## How TO\_PERCENT Relates to the % Operator

Google Sheets also has a postfix `%` operator, whose function form is [UNARY\_PERCENT](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/unarypercent-function). They do different jobs:

| Formula | What happens | Displays |
| - | - | - |
| `=TO_PERCENT(0.25)` | Formats 0.25 as a percent | 25% |
| `=25%` | Divides 25 by 100 | 0.25 (or 25% if formatted) |
| `=UNARY_PERCENT(25)` | Divides 25 by 100 | 0.25 |
| `=TO_PERCENT(UNARY_PERCENT(25))` | Divides, then formats | 25% |

Use TO\_PERCENT when your number is already a ratio; use UNARY\_PERCENT (or `%`) when it's a whole-number percentage that needs converting to a ratio.

## Basic Examples

### Format a ratio

```
=TO_PERCENT(0.075)
```

Displays `7.50%` (the number of decimals shown may vary with the format Sheets applies).

### Conversion rate

```
=TO_PERCENT(C2 / B2)
```

Divides conversions by visitors and shows the result as a percentage.

### Growth rate

```
=TO_PERCENT((C2 - B2) / B2)
```

Shows period-over-period change as a percentage.

### Share of total

```
=ARRAYFORMULA(TO_PERCENT(B2:B20 / SUM(B2:B20)))
```

## How TO\_PERCENT Behaves

- **The value stays numeric**, so you can continue to calculate with it. `=TO_PERCENT(0.2) * 100` returns 20.
- **Non-numeric values are returned unchanged** rather than producing an error.
- **Precision is preserved**; only the display changes. Use ROUND to fix the stored precision.

## Common Use Cases

- **Marketing metrics**: CTR, conversion rate, bounce rate.
- **Finance**: Margins, growth rates, budget utilisation.
- **Reporting**: Percent of total in summary tables produced by QUERY or ARRAYFORMULA, where cell formatting is lost.
- **Grades**: Score divided by maximum, shown as a percent.

## Common Errors

- **Results like 2500%**: The input was already a whole-number percentage. Divide by 100 first, or use UNARY\_PERCENT.
- **Concatenation drops the format**: `="Rate: "&TO_PERCENT(B2)` shows the raw decimal. Use `TEXT(B2, "0.0%")` inside text.
- **#DIV/0! from rate formulas**: When the denominator is zero, wrap the division: `=TO_PERCENT(IFERROR(C2/B2, 0))`.

## Tips and Best Practices

- Keep percentages stored as fractions (0.25) throughout your sheet; it makes every downstream calculation simpler.
- Use TO\_PERCENT inside array formulas and QUERY-driven reports where you can't pre-format cells.
- For a specific number of decimals in the display, apply a custom format or use TEXT for text output.

## Example use case

A growth marketer calculates click-through rates from impressions in column B and clicks in column C. =TO\_PERCENT(C2/B2) shows each campaign's CTR as a percentage, and because the result is still numeric, she can sort and average the column directly.
