## Parameters

| Parameter | Required | Description |
| - | - | - |
| **value** | Yes | The value or cell reference to convert. Formatting such as currency, percent, or date is removed and the underlying number is returned. |

## What Is TO\_PURE\_NUMBER?

TO\_PURE\_NUMBER strips the formatting from a numeric value and returns the bare number underneath. A cell showing `$1,234.50` becomes 1234.5; a cell showing `45%` becomes 0.45; a date such as 1 January 2026 becomes its serial number, 46023.

It is the opposite of the formatting functions [TO\_DOLLARS](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/todollars-function), [TO\_PERCENT](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/topercent-function) and [TO\_DATE](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/todate-function), which take a plain number and add a display format.

## Understanding "Pure" Numbers

Spreadsheets separate a cell's **value** from its **format**. Dates are counts of days since 30 December 1899, times are fractions of a day, percentages are fractions of 1, and currency is just a number with a symbol. TO\_PURE\_NUMBER exposes the stored value so you can see exactly what Sheets is working with.

| Displayed as | TO\_PURE\_NUMBER returns |
| - | - |
| $1,234.50 | 1234.5 |
| 45% | 0.45 |
| 1/1/2026 | 46023 |
| 12:00:00 PM | 0.5 |
| 1/1/2026 6:00 AM | 46023.25 |

## Basic Examples

### Remove currency formatting

```
=TO_PURE_NUMBER(B2)
```

If B2 shows $99.00, the result is 99.

### See a date's serial number

```
=TO_PURE_NUMBER(DATE(2026, 10, 26))
```

### Turn a time into hours

```
=TO_PURE_NUMBER(C2) * 24
```

A duration of 7:30 becomes 0.3125 days, and multiplying by 24 gives 7.5 hours.

### Clean output from formatting functions

```
=TO_PURE_NUMBER(TO_PERCENT(0.3))
```

Returns 0.3 with no percent formatting.

## Why Use It?

- **Debugging**: When a comparison or lookup behaves unexpectedly, TO\_PURE\_NUMBER shows the actual value behind the display — for example, revealing that a "date" is really a date-time with a fractional part.
- **Exports and integrations**: Some systems want raw numbers without currency symbols or percent signs.
- **Arithmetic on dates and times**: Getting the serial number makes date maths explicit.
- **Overriding inherited formats**: Formulas that reference a date cell often inherit date formatting; TO\_PURE\_NUMBER forces a plain number display.

## TO\_PURE\_NUMBER vs. VALUE

These two are easy to mix up:

- **VALUE** parses **text** that looks like a number (such as "1,200" or "$5") and returns a number.
- **TO\_PURE\_NUMBER** takes a value that is **already numeric** but formatted, and removes the formatting.

If your data arrived as text — left-aligned, or ISTEXT returns TRUE — VALUE (or DATEVALUE for dates) is usually the right tool.

## Common Use Cases

- Preparing data for CSV export or API upload.
- Converting time durations into decimal hours for payroll.
- Inspecting date serials when date comparisons don't line up.
- Removing currency or percent formatting introduced by other formulas.

## Common Errors

- **Text isn't converted the way you expect**: Values imported as text strings aren't really numbers yet. Use VALUE or DATEVALUE first.
- **Large unexpected numbers**: A result around 46,000 means the input was a date — that's its serial number, not an error.
- **Decimals on a date**: A fractional part means the value includes a time. Use INT to drop it.

## Tips and Best Practices

- Use TO\_PURE\_NUMBER as a quick diagnostic in a spare column when data looks right but behaves wrong.
- Multiply time results by 24 for hours, or by 1440 for minutes.
- Apply a number format afterwards if you want specific decimal places.

## Example use case

A payroll coordinator records shift lengths as durations like 8:45. To calculate pay, she uses =TO\_PURE\_NUMBER(C2)\*24 to convert each duration to decimal hours (8.75), then multiplies by the hourly rate.
