## Parameters

| Parameter | Required | Description |
| - | - | - |
| **percentage** | Yes | The number to interpret as a percentage. The function returns this value divided by 100. |

## What Is UNARY\_PERCENT?

UNARY\_PERCENT treats its input as a percentage and returns the equivalent decimal — in other words, it divides the value by 100. `=UNARY_PERCENT(25)` returns 0.25. It is the named form of the `%` sign written after a number, so `=UNARY_PERCENT(25)` and `=25%` produce the same result.

## How UNARY\_PERCENT Relates to the `%` Operator

In Google Sheets, `%` placed after a value is a **postfix operator** that divides by 100. Google exposes each operator as a function, and the percent sign maps to UNARY\_PERCENT:

| Operator form | Function form | Result |
| - | - | - |
| `=50%` | `=UNARY_PERCENT(50)` | 0.5 |
| `=A2%` | `=UNARY_PERCENT(A2)` | A2 ÷ 100 |
| `=B2*15%` | `=B2*UNARY_PERCENT(15)` | 15% of B2 |

The word "unary" means the operator works on a single value, the same way [UMINUS](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/uminus-function) (the leading `-`) and [UPLUS](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/uplus-function) (the leading `+`) do.

## UNARY\_PERCENT vs. TO\_PERCENT

These two are often confused:

- **UNARY\_PERCENT changes the value**: 25 becomes 0.25. It does not apply percent formatting, so the cell may show 0.25.
- **[TO\_PERCENT](https://betteranalyst.com/google-sheets/topercent-function) changes the display**: 0.25 stays 0.25 but is shown as 25%.

To take a whole-number percentage like 25 and both convert and display it as 25%, combine them:

```
=TO_PERCENT(UNARY_PERCENT(A2))
```

## Basic Examples

### Convert a percentage to a decimal

```
=UNARY_PERCENT(8)
```

Returns 0.08.

### Calculate a percentage of an amount

```
=B2 * UNARY_PERCENT(C2)
```

If B2 is 2,000 and C2 holds 15 (meaning 15%), returns 300.

### Apply a discount

```
=B2 * (1 - UNARY_PERCENT(C2))
```

Reduces the price in B2 by the whole-number percentage in C2.

### Convert a column of whole-number percentages

```
=ARRAYFORMULA(UNARY_PERCENT(C2:C100))
```

## When Is UNARY\_PERCENT Useful?

Most of the time, typing `%` is quicker. UNARY\_PERCENT earns its place when:

- Data from another system stores percentages as whole numbers (15 meaning 15%) and you want the conversion to be explicit and easy to audit.
- You're generating formulas programmatically and prefer function calls to operator syntax.
- You want formulas to read clearly for colleagues unfamiliar with the postfix `%` operator.

## Common Use Cases

- **Tax and commission**: Rates stored as whole numbers.
- **Discount calculators**.
- **Survey data** where responses are recorded as 0–100.
- **Importing KPIs** from tools that export "45" for 45%.

## Common Errors

- **Double conversion**: If the input is already a decimal (0.15), UNARY\_PERCENT turns it into 0.0015. Check whether your data is 15 or 0.15 before converting.
- **Result looks wrong because of formatting**: If the output cell is formatted as a percent, 0.25 will display as 25% — correct, though it may look like nothing happened.
- **#VALUE!**: The input is text that can't be read as a number, such as "15 pct".

## Tips and Best Practices

- Label columns clearly as "rate (%)" (whole numbers) or "rate" (decimals).
- Use UNARY\_PERCENT once, in a helper column, rather than in every downstream formula.
- Pair with TO\_PERCENT for display.

## Example use case

A sales manager imports commission rates from an HR system that stores them as whole numbers (e.g. 7 for 7%). The formula =B2\*UNARY\_PERCENT(C2) multiplies each rep's revenue by the correctly converted rate to calculate commission.
