Spreadsheets are powerful, but writing formulas and extracting insights can slow you down. Excel AI changes that—automating formula creation, analysis, and clear visuals in one flow. Better Analyst is the free AI for Excel that combines an Excel formula generator, a full AI Excel assistant, and automatic data analysis and visualization—all in one chat.
Whether you're looking for AI tools for Excel, a way to use AI in Excel without plugins, or simply a faster Excel formula helper, Better Analyst handles it. Upload any spreadsheet and ask questions in plain English—you'll get formulas, insights, and charts back in seconds.
This page focuses on working with an existing spreadsheet. To start from a text prompt and create a new workbook instead, use the AI spreadsheet generator.
These worked examples show how a plain-English request maps to an Excel formula. Copy the sample data into the indicated cells, then check the result in your workbook.
Sum column A where column B is Marketing.
| Row | A: Amount | B: Department |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 120 | Marketing |
| 3 | 80 | Sales |
| 4 | 200 | Marketing |
Formula
=SUMIF(B2:B4,"Marketing",A2:A4)Expected result: 320
The two Marketing amounts are 120 and 200. SUMIF adds only those matching rows.
Learn SUMIF and try the formula toolCalculate growth from the previous value in A2 to the current value in B2.
| Row | A: Previous | B: Current |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 120 | 150 |
Formula
=IFERROR((B2-A2)/A2,0)Expected result: 25% (0.25 before percentage formatting)
Format the result as a percentage. This example returns 0 if the denominator is zero or another error occurs; that fallback is not a meaningful growth rate. Review zero or invalid inputs separately.
Learn IFERROR and try the formula toolFind the price for the SKU in D2. Enter PEN-02 in D2.
| Row | A: SKU | B: Price |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | NOTE-01 | 12.50 |
| 3 | PEN-02 | 4.00 |
| 4 | FILE-03 | 8.00 |
Formula
=XLOOKUP(D2,A2:A4,B2:B4,"Not found")Expected result: 4.00
XLOOKUP finds PEN-02 in A3 and returns the price from B3. Format the result with two decimal places. Requires an Excel version that supports XLOOKUP, such as Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021 and later.

Go beyond formulas. Upload a sheet and ask:
The AI runs the right steps and returns answers tied to your data.
Question: “Which product had more revenue across both regions?” These rows are fictional, and the totals below are calculated directly from the table—not represented as an AI-generated response.
| Product | Region | Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Notebook | North | $60 |
| Pen | North | $40 |
| Notebook | South | $50 |
| Pen | South | $30 |
Revenue by product
Notebook leads by $40.
You don't just get numbers. You get patterns, summaries, and suggested next steps—turning static tables into decisions.
No manual ranges or pivots. Better Analyst generates the right chart for the job:
For time trends and tracking changes over periods.
For category comparisons and ranking data.
For multiple metrics and layered analysis.
From raw data to presentation-ready graphics in minutes.
Using AI in Excel doesn't require plugins, macros, or a Microsoft 365 subscription. With Better Analyst you can use AI on any spreadsheet—Excel, Google Sheets, or a plain CSV—in three steps:
Create a free account, then upload an .xlsx, .xls, or .csv file or paste your data in the workspace. Usage and file limits depend on your plan. No Excel plugin is required.
Describe what you need. "Build me a formula for…", "What's the trend in…", "Create a chart of…". The AI reads your sheet and figures out the rest.
Better Analyst returns the answer tied to your data — ready-to-paste formulas, instant insights, and downloadable charts.
That's the whole flow. No formula syntax, no pivot-table wizardry, no writing VBA. If you can describe what you want, the AI can build it.
There are a lot of "AI Excel tools" out there. Most are just a formula generator with a chat wrapper. A real AI for Excel should do more than hand you a SUMIF. Here's what separates the best AI Excel tools from the rest:
Better Analyst was built around these four criteria—a free AI for Excel that reads your file, explains its work, and handles analysis and charts in the same chat.
Better Analyst is more than an Excel formula generator—it's a full Excel formula helper that writes, checks, explains, and debugs formulas for you.
Describe what you need in plain English and get the exact formula—no syntax wrestling.
Paste a formula that isn't working. The AI tells you what's wrong and how to fix it.
Drop in any formula and get a plain-English breakdown of what each part does.
From simple SUMs to nested INDEX/MATCH and array formulas—built on demand.
It works the same way for Google Sheets formulas, so you don't need a different tool for each spreadsheet.
One tool for quick formula fixes and deep analysis—start to finish.
Whether you're stuck on a formula or buried in rows, Excel AI speeds up the path to insight. Better Analyst makes it easier, faster, and smarter to generate formulas, analyze data, and visualize results—together.
